Creating your own social network sounds like an impossible dream, at least to the casual online money maker. Whilst myspace is not exactly a technical marvel, the complexity of the coding and design is beyond most wannabe web entrepreneurs looking to make a quick money spinner. There is a solution out there though for those looking for an interesting internet project that has the potential to both make money and open up horizons socially. Enter Ning, which lets you set up a custom, niche social network very quickly indeed. I had a quick play around with their easy to use interface and made a network for London based entrepreneurs in 5 minutes. Basic features include member profiles, blogging, news feeds and forums, an for a small fee you can open it up to place your own contextual advertising within your network [the fact that you cannot do this without paying kind of sucks, but then again they have to have some sort of business model…].
Ning’s biggest competitor out there is CrowdVine, another quick and easy interface that generates a custom network, though the service is not as slick as Ning, and seems to be designed mainly for conference organisers.
There is potentially a lot of fun to be had building niche social networking sites around topics you enjoy, and if yours takes off, it could be a very profitable endevour.
