I have just made my first Facebook application… and it was a lot easier than expected. I used the super-slick site widgetbox.com to first make a widget which displays the output from my RSS feed, which I then converted into a Facebook app. The process was a breeze from start to finish and could turn out to be really useful for publicising nicksmithblogs.com.
To set about making a widget to publicise your blog, you first have to sign up to widgetbox which takes a matter of seconds. You are then asked what sort of widget you want to create. I chose an RSS feed widget, as for the time being I just want a nice and simple way to display my posts to the masses.

As you can see, it’s possible to design a widget with Flash, HTML, your web page and Google Gadgets, but we’ll keep this simple (until I learn how to actually write any code…).
After entering my feed address, the real fun started, and I was able to choose from several colour schemes that fit in with my blog theme, select a title, add tags and so on. This left me with a rather nifty widget with my RSS feed displayed snugly within a slick looking frame - perfect to share with the world. Finishing your blog widget is as easy as clicking ‘publish widget’ at the bottom of the page, and hey presto, I was able to get the code to embed my new widget in my bog/website straight away.
The next step was to turn this fairly generic widget into a fully fledged Facebook application. With it being a simple RSS feed, the process was extremely simple. When you click the ‘make a facebook app’ you are taken step-by-step through setting up a developer account on FB, registering your widget, getting Facebook to grab the widget hosted on widgetbox, setting it up for sharing… and that was it. The process is quite detailed, and there are around 15 steps you have to go through, but it was all explained simply by widgetbox, and allowed me to make changes to my Facebook account within a frame in the same browser window.
After choosing to share my new application with as many friends as I feel can handle it, all that remains now is to sit back ad wait for my RSS readership to grow and grow and grow.
If anybody is interested in adding the nicksmithblogs.com feed to their website, click the ‘add widget’ button at the bottom of my widget.
