I firmly believe that just as people say that everybody has at least one book inside of them, so do they have a good business idea. A perfect example of this cropped up (no pun intended) when I had my hair cut yesterday. What should have been a standard 20 minute trim turned into an hour long discussion about angel funding, thanks to me not keeping my trap shut about how everybody should act on their entrepreneurial impulses. The woman cutting my hair had a great idea for a concept salon which I actually thought could really work. I know I’d want to go there at least, and I usually hate having my hair cut. She went on and on about all the little details, they type of staff she would employ, the decor, which products she would sell on the side, what music she’d play - she’d obviously had this idea for quite a while.
When I suggested that she should take the plunge and go for it, she seemed hesitant, owing to the fact that she ‘had no book-keeping skills’. What a lame excuse! I spent the next 20 minutes telling her all about Business Link and how they could help her put together a business plan, about the online and offline resources that could help her brush up on her accounting skills, the numerous grants and loans out there for small business owners if only she took the time to look…
The fact is, there is probably never a better time to start a business. The onset of a recession is often the best time for entrepreneurs - it’s a time when uncertainty promotes innovation and the big market players can lose their footing, leaving a gap for small enterprises to swoop in and make a killing. There are so many organisations out there who will help entrepreneurs get started, as they are the lifeblood of an economy. I told her this, and although she went very quiet and pensive after my rant, she gave me a bloody good haircut.
